Collection How to Fix Laptop Hinge

1. How to Fix Broken Laptop Hinge

Hello guys!!

I will show you “HOW TO FIX BROKEN LAPTOP HINGE”

In this case, It happened on a TOSHIBA C800 laptop where the hinge are pretty bad damaged, the casing has cracked and the part where the hinge sit starting to loose.

As you can see this is the condition before i fix it, the base & bottom case are badly damaged till the jack power comes up looks like on the photo.

And now i will show you how to fix broken laptop hinge step by step.

First thing first, prepare the tool. You will need..

  • Tweezers
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Cutter Knife
  • Old Case
  • Strong Glue (i’m using Korean brand G Glue)
  • Baking Soda

Step 1: We Need to Disassemble the Laptop

We need to disassemble the laptop,
and make sure you remove the laptop battery first before you continue to disassemble your laptop completely. Put all of the parts on a one place.

*For example, i’m putting all of the part on a one container. So i won’t miss placed any parts.

Then, take off all of the parts until you find the part that will be repaired. That is the hinge..

As you can see the broken hinge as shown on the photo. The yellow/gold thing is where the hinge screws stands and the one is the part where the laptop hinge sit in the bottom casing.

Step 2: Position the Brass and Screws on It's Base

There are some things you must pay attention to

The position of the screws holder (brass) must be straight as shown
Place the screw on the brass, to prevent the baking soda and glue covering the hole
Placing the screw on the brass is to make it easier to hold with tweezers
Do it carefully and adjust the brass to it’s base before the gluing process

Step 3: Let’s Began to Sprinkle the Baking Soda Around the Brass

Sprinkle the baking soda around the brass little by little and periodically followed by glue until the powder mound and glue are formed just like on the photos.

Wait up to 1 hour until it dries and hardens.

Step 4: Take Off the Screws

After the glue are hardens, take off the screws from the brass.
See? This is why i told you to put the screws on it’s place, to prevent the glue from covering the brass.

Step 5: Trim the Surface

Next we need to trim the surface so that it is evenly aligned and can be placed by its hinges

We gonna use Cutter Knife to trim the surface, level the height with the brass installed. Once again make sure it’s evenly aligned. Because, it can affect when we reassemble the case later.

Step 6: Loosen the Hinge a Bit

After it looks neat, start to reassemble the laptop hinge carefully according to the instructions

And there’s one more thing you need to do

You must be loosen the hinge a bit, just a bit. To make it lighter on the hinge,

You can use Pliers for this process.

Step 7: Finally!

After the hinge is perfectly attached to it's base and it works fine, then it's time to rebuild the laptop

2. Quick Fix for Broken Laptop Hinges

The hinges on my Inspiron 300m are worn out. Being cheap and not wanting to fork out > $100 for new hinges I came up with this simple workaround with velcro strips and a brace- mightn't look the best but it works!

Step 1: Attach Velcro Strips

Get some velcro strips and attach to the bottom of the laptop and the back of the screen. In retrospect I would probably go for wider strips than I have now.

Step 2: Attach Brace

Use an old brace or get one for $1.50 at the hardware store and secure it onto the laptop using the strips. Voila, the screen now stays up!!

3. Simple Fix for Vaio Laptop Hinge

My friend, Sankalp was one of the unfortunate owners of the Sony Vaio E14 Series Laptop. Just after one year of careful use, the hinge started breaking the plastic case it was fit inside! You can see the exact way the laptop behaves in this video by Tyler Morgan.

So, we built two types of holders (they act like clamps to keep the screen together) sheet metal, which are intact till now.

We need to keep the metal hinge pressed against the laptop screen using a sturdy support. We used aluminium
or Galvanised Iron sheet metal. We will discuss two types of designs for folding the sheet metal and using them to keep the hinge and plastic case together....almost forever. We leave it up to you, you can even mix these designs and come up with your own!

Step 1: Walkthrough for Design 1

When we saw the right side of the laptop screen breaking, we rushed to the sheet metal shop at Blind-Lead Makerspace. First, we took a piece of paper and decided how to fold it so that it clamps the broken laptop screen.

Have a look at the video. (This explains by folding paper)

Also, in the pictures, you can see the dimensions used in the sketch and how our hack looked.

Step 2: Walkthrough for Design 2

After the right side of the screen was mended, we had fun showing off! But soon, the left part of the screen started breaking because of the other hinge. This time we tried a different strategy to repair it.

We take GI Sheet and cut it L shaped. We just fold it and apply sugru / hot glue. No punching holes!

Have a look at the video. (This explains by folding paper)

Step 3: Collect Materials and Tools!

DESIGN 1:

(8 cm x 9 cm) Aluminum Sheet (3mm thickness)

(1) Sheet metal Punch (3 mm diameter)

(one 5g packet) Sugru (Optional)

Hot glue (Optional)

(1) Pliers/Vise Grip

(1) Snip

(1 pair, 3mm diameter) Nut and Bolt (Optional)

DESIGN 2:

(12 cm x 16 cm) Galvanized Iron Sheet (1 to 2mm thickness)

(one 5g packet) Sugru (Optional)

Hot glue (Optional)

(1) Pliers/Vise Grip

(1) Snip

Step 4: Cutting Sheet Metal

First, cut paper of the correct dimensions and do check if they fit properly when you fold it.

This is to get an idea about the shape of sheet metal you need to cut and the way you would fold it.

Then take a ruler and mark lines on the sheet and start cutting it using snip.

Step 5: Folding the Pieces

Now, push the sheet through the laptop and mark the place from where you want to bend the sheet.

To bend GI sheet, you may use pliers or keep the sheet on a dye structure and hit with hammer.

Oh, and don't spray paint before bending the sheet as the color gets spoilt!

To bend Aluminum Sheet, I used this Brake

Step 6: Check Fitting

Now check if the sheet metal has bee folded well or not, by checking if it tightly fits and clamps the hinge breakage.

Step 7: Folding Again

After fitting, again fold the sheet metal as required or shown in the video(1) or video(2).

Step 8: Punching Aluminium Sheet

In design 1, two arms are projecting outside from the laptop. Now clamp these arms tightly and punch a 3 mm hole in them and use a nut and bolt to fasten.

Step 9: Filling With Sugru!

You can see gaps between the sheet metal and the laptop. To fill these gaps up and smoothen the sharp edges, use Sugru or Hot Glue.

Step 10: Spray Paint Finish!

Put some newspaper nearby the sheet metal and start spraying.

Let me know if you have any suggestions to improve this instructable, or any questions!
