Collection How to Repair Dell LCD/LED Monitor

1. How to Troubleshooting and Repairing LCD Monitor Randomly No Display and No Power Problem

Model: Dell E152FPb LCD Monitor

Symptom: After 5 minutes or several hours power on the lcd monitor, it will no display and no power (no LED light).

This lcd monitor was sent by my friend with symptom no display randomly. Sometime it happened after several minutes or several hours! As usual, before open the lcd monitor, try to testing this lcd monitor first and it is working properly! So just leave it burnt test and after 2 hours, the problem occur. Before the lcd monitor become no display, i saw the power LED light blinking several times and the light off, after that, no display.

Do you know which section and components failure?

After opened the lcd monitor same as photos above, power on the monitor and starting measured the IP board output voltages, BL_ON signal and mainboard. All these voltages and the BL-ON signal are ok and stable. Even resolder all the bad soldering points also not help at all. When this lcd monitor no display problem came again, i try to testing all the voltages and signal points and found that this monitor is in the standby mode. Where you need to push the lcd monitor power switch to on it again, then it will came the exactly voltages.

So i guess it could be the mainboard MCU, Flash IC (or their firmware), crystal and the control panel/key pad. Then i try the easy step first, disconnect the control panel and direct power on from the main AC plug. LCD Monitor working properly and i continue to testing control panel board. Suddenly i found that 4 micro switch buttons, got 3 buttons were leaked. You can refer to the picture below:

The good micro switch button when you push it on, then you can get the 0 (Zero) ohm, when release it, then it is no value or call it infinity. I suggest that change all 4 micro switch together to prevent any return case.

After changed these micro switch buttons, this lcd monitor are working perfectly now!

Conclusion: Actually changed these components are easy but it is hard to find out the culprit! So you need to know how LCD Monitor working and the knowledge of troubleshooting & repairing LCD Monitor!

Enjoy Repair!

2. A (very) Simple LCD Backlight Fix

Fix any broken LCD backlight with an ordinary light bulb and a dead CRT monitor.

Broken LCD monitors basically come in three categories:
1) Cracked LCD panel, rendering the unit completely worthless
2) Backlight problem
3) Power supply problem

If it's a backlight or power supply problem, it can be fixed.
Usually, the problem stems from the high voltage inverter circuitry, either bad power transistors, capacitors, or thermal stress on the circuit board leading to broken solder joints.
But fixing these problems can often be a short term solution. The bulbs themselves have a limited lifespan, and the high voltage power supplies are prone to failure.
The panels themselves almost always outlive the backlights and high voltage power supplies.
The 17" Dell LCD monitor I found was no exception. When I first plugged it in, it would cycle power on and off continuously, with a notable burning smell. Further inspection revealed a fried power transistor. When i replaced it, the monitor stayed on, but the backlight would flicker on and off, then finally shut off after a few seconds..
The panel was good, but trying to fix the backlight with the proper parts wasn't really worth it.

But maybe I could still save it, or even make it better. After all, it's just a light. Lights should be user-replaceable things anyway.
I mean, a Lite-Brite was the cheapest toy, yet you could at least change the bulb.
So here's the result of my experiment, with help from an old CRT monitor:

Step 1: Go to Trash, Locate a CRT Monitor

Take a CRT monitor, remove the guts and dispose, keeping just the shell and monitor stand.

Install a light bulb socket about 1/2 way back. I used switching socket from an old lamp.
(for the bulb, I used a 60w-equivalent "daylight"/6500k CFL bulb. It has a blueish glow to it. )

Step 2: Cutout Back of LCD Monitor

For the LCD monitor, cutout the back and remove the metal shields/ PCB's behind the panel, allowing light to pass through it.
(This step varies a lot from brand to brand. Some brands will have ribbon connections on both the X and Y plane, while some just on the X plane. Fortunately, for my Dell monitor (which was actually a BenQ monitor), the ribbon connector was only on the X axis, so lifting it out of the way to allow light to pass through was easy, without requiring any extra wiring. )

For the panel light filters, there should be some diffusing paper/plastic behind the LCD, 3 sheets (one clear, one reflective, one translucent white), and then a large Plexiglass-like filter. I removed the Plexiglass and everything behind it, only keeping the 3 thin paper-like sheets behind the LCD. Shining a light behind the LCD resulted in an even white glow

Step 3: Mounting the LCD

4) Relocate the boards from the LCD panel to the CRT shell, mount LCD panel, and connect everything up. For mounting everything I drilled holes and used zip ties.

Step 4: Results

See my project page for more pictures.

Conclusion

This LCD was saved from the trash.
And now if the light ever goes out, it's easy to change. Also, as a bonus, the monitor vents glow, partly illuminating the desk and keyboard at night. Shouldn't all monitors be made this way?
:-)

Notes

LCD Monitor is a Dell E172FP.

When the monitor is off and the light is on, the display is more transparent than black, sort of a light/mid gray.

There is some minor hot-spotting, but not very serious. Given the type of cheap hack this is, it is more than acceptable.

Obviously, the monitor is more bulky than it used to be, but very light. Almost half the weight of LCD monitor as it was before.
Bathroom scale says it weighs 7lbs. (original LCD weight was 13.25lbs)
Gettting rid of the LCD's metal frame, stand, and heavy plexiglass light filter was the major contributor to the weight reduction.
The CRT's shell and base are just plastic (with some springs).

The LCD frame was smaller than the CRT's. I just cut out some cardboard to fill in the gaps to block out the light for now. I know, it looks ugly. Later, I'll make a better looking frame.

3. Dell E172FPb LCD Monitor Fix

Problem: The monitor turns on for about 2 to 3 sec, is very dim and than goes blank but yet the power button is still green on the monitor.

Solution: Examine, diagnose and fix a Dell monitor with only a few tools and a repair kit bought of off ebay that consist of four (4) transistors and a fuse. Oh and all the hardware will run 5 bucks with shipping, instead 100$ for a new monitor.

Tools:
- Philips screw driver
- Flathead screw driver
- Multimeter
- Soldering tools

Hardware:
- Transistors x4
- Fuse

Step 1: Dismantle Monitor
Dismantling the actual monitor takes no longer than 10 min with very few components to worry about.

Steps:
1. Unscrew the four (4) screws that attach the base from the monitor and remove the base stand.
2. Along the bottom of the monitor case use a flat screw driver (preferably a panel popper so not to damage the case) and pry apart the housing. Continue all along the monitors sides.
3. Once the back monitor panel is removed detach the power button cable.
4. Remove the front panel by prying the four (4) clips along the sides of the panel.
5. Slide the protective metal housing off the case.
6. Unplug the high voltage monitor plugs.
7. Unscrew the four (4) screws from the sides of the housing (two (2) on each side)
8. Slowly lift the housing and unplug the monitor cable.
9. On the outside of the housing, remove the two screws near the VGA input and remove the metal plate there.
10. Pop out the plastic support above the power cable input.
11. unscrew the seven (6) screws from the circuit board and one (1) screw for the ground cable.
12. Apply pressure from underneath the circuit board and squeeze the clips to remove the two (2) clips on the circuit board.
13. Remove circuit board.

Step 2: Locate and Test Transistor and Fuse

Here we need to locate and test the four (4) c5707 Transistors. Unfortunately due to how the transistors work, we will need to unsolder them and test them outside the circuit via multimeter.

Steps:
1. Locate c5707 transistors
2. Unsolder the transistors and tests them using the multimeter
3. replace the necessary transistor. I bought an actual repair kit off of Ebay for like 5$ or something like that.
4. Locate and test fuse (replace if need be)

Step 3: Replace Hardware
Pretty much follow step 1 to reassemble your Monitor.  Then hook up the monitor and pray that this worked. I'm now wizz on this stuff so if it didn't work I'm all out of ideas. Good Luck!
